Mental Health Peer Connections
Secretary-Treasurer, State of Nevada Board of Examiners for Marriage and Family Therapists and Certified Professional Counselors
Marriage & Family Therapist, National Certified Counselor
AAMFT Clinical Fellow
Jake is the co-founder of Zephyr Wellness, a Reno-based outpatient clinic with a focus on
philanthropy, community involvement, and clinical education. Across his professional career
Jake worked for six different mental health agencies, two colleges, two school districts,
Washoe County Adult Drug Court, and a psychiatric inpatient hospital. He has done work both
in-home and in-office and enjoys teaching, consulting, and training as much as he does one-on-one
psychotherapy. In addition to his graduate degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, he also holds a master’s
degree in Higher Education Administration.
As a systemic thinker, Jake enjoys challenging systems and helping to change them from within. As such, his desire to serve the Board of Examiners offers ample opportunity to influence Nevada’s counseling landscape. One of his top reasons for seeking appointment was to improve transparency so that the public can have easy access to readily digestible information about laws, regulations, governance, and policies that affect practice. As secretary-treasurer he hopes to augment and streamline the board’s budget in order to fund more staff, which should allow for greater responsiveness to requests from both the clinical and non-clinical public.
Jake is a third generation native Nevadan whose family comes from both rural and urban areas. His father graduated from White Pine High School and his mother went to Reno High School while the entire family attended the University of Nevada. He has played sports his entire life and still enjoys doing so, along with backpacking, hunting, cooking, exploring his spiritual faith, and being dad and husband to his family. His volunteer activities include: sitting as a Core Management Team member of the Health and Wellness Hub of Lyon and Storey Counties; volunteering with the Nevada Coalition for Suicide Prevention; participating as a member of the Hillside Foursquare Church council; participating in the Washoe County School District’s Student Attendance Review Board; and teaching psychological seminars at his fraternity, Sigma Phi Epslion.
